SPECIFIC PHOBIA
WHAT IS A SPECIFIC PHOBIA?
A specific phobia is a fear about a particular situation or object. Encountering the phobic situation/object always or almost always induces a high level of fear or anxiety. This often leads to avoidance patterns.
WHAT TO EXPECT?
Treatment for phobias involves a combination of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Exposure Therapy, designed to address both the cognitive and behavioral components of fear. In CBT/ACT, we explore the thought patterns that fuel the phobia, such as beliefs and emotional reasoning. Additionally we work to defuse from thoughts, recognizing thoughts as temporary and not necessarily based in real danger. A key aspect of treatment is helping individuals learn to tolerate discomfort—especially the physical and emotional sensations that arise when they face a feared situation. F

Alongside CBT, Exposure Therapy gradually exposes individuals to feared situations in a controlled and systematic way, helping disprove the danger of the fear over time. By avoiding situations, individuals reinforce the idea that the situation is too dangerous. This process often involves creating a hierarchy of fears, starting small and working up to more challenging exposures. By facing these fears head-on, without engaging in safety behaviors or seeking reassurance, clients begin to rewire their brain’s response to fear and uncertainty, leading to lasting change and freedom from the phobia.
